The Baku City Circuit once again delivered chaos, speed, and dramatic high-stakes racing for the 15th round of the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship. Qualifying Report: Russell Dominates as Antonelli Crumbles

Qualifying around the tight, high-speed castle section produced massive drama and an inverted grid behind the front row.

Q1 & Q2 Highlights:

  • Championship Leader’s Nightmare: Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) clipped the wall in Q1, damaging his suspension and leaving him stranded down in P16.
  • Early Exits: Joining Antonelli on the sidelines early were both Audi drivers (Gabriel Bortoleto in P17 and Nico Hülkenberg in P18), Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso (P19) and Lance Stroll (P21), and Cadillac duo Sergio Pérez (P20) and Valtteri Bottas (P22).
  • Q2 Squeeze: Haas’s Oliver Bearman (P11) missed out on Q3 by a whisker, followed by Liam Lawson (P12), Alex Albon (P13), Esteban Ocon (P14), and Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Lindblad (P15).

Q3 Shootout:

George Russell laid down a stunning bench lap of 1:42.526, taking pole position by a massive 0.837s over Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. McLaren’s Oscar Piastri secured P3, while Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar put in an exceptional effort on his return from a wrist injury to qualify P4. Lando Norris (P5) and Lewis Hamilton (P6) struggled for slipstreams, while Max Verstappen could only manage P8 after a messy final attempt. Williams’s Carlos Sainz (P9) and Alpine’s Franco Colapinto (P10) rounded out the top ten.
